ahsge_basicsIn Alabama all students must pass the Alabama High School Graduation Exam to earn a diploma. The primary purpose of the AHSGE is to evaluate a student's mastery of content in the core courses. Passing the AHSGE is necessary in order for a student to get a high school diploma. The test looks at accomplishment in Reading, Language, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Students are given a number of opportunities to take every subtest.

The state of Alabama recognizes six diploma types: 
   Alabama High School Diploma (AHSD) - Earn required 26 credits and pass the AHSGE.
   Alabama High School Diploma with Advanced Academic Endorsement - Earn required 26 credits (advanced courses) and pass the AHSGE.
   Alabama High School Diploma with Career Technical Endorsement - Earn required 26 credits (3 technical courses) and pass the AHSGE.
   Alabama High School Diploma with Advanced Career Technical Endorsement - Earn required 26 credits (advanced courses in addition to 3 technical courses) and pass the AHSGE.
   Alabama Alternate Adult High School Diploma (for students who earned the required 26 credits for AHSD but did not pass the AHSGE) - the test of General Education Development (GED) is necessary.
   Alabama High School Occupational Diploma - This diploma is only an alternative for students with disabilities as defined by The Individuals with Disabilities Act (Public Law 105-17).

Alabama High School Graduation Exam is multiple-choice exam:
  It is in general written on the eleventh-grade level.
  It requires students to show what they have learned in necessary high school core course work and highlights logic, problem solving, and other thinking abilities.
  The reading section requires students to read and understand particles, poems, editorials, manuals, and other comparable materials.
  The language section focuses on grammar abilities, punctuation, word choice, sentence structure, and organizational skills for writing.
  The majority of the math section includes questions about fundamental Algebra I skills. In addition it covers a number of pre-geometry taught in grades seven and eight.
  The majority of the science section comprises biology questions. The rest is physical science taught in grades seven and eight. School year 2007-08 will evaluate biology only.
  The social studies section concentrates on U.S. History.
