Reading Proficiency Level Descriptions

H
Advanced
A reading proficiency rating of H means that students are at the Advanced High or Higher level. Students at this level can understand the majority of abstract and compound printed materials, for instance specialized reports, even on new topics, but they may have complexity with extremely informal or technical language. Students understand more than what is in a straight line stated and how the culture of the people influences the language. Besides, students are capable of recognizing an author's writing style and understand the significance of an author's choice of words.
A
Advanced
A reading proficiency rating of A denotes that students are at the Advanced level. They can understand the major ideas, facts, and a number of details of descriptions, short stories, news items, social notices, personal and business letters, and specialized materials while they are written in an obvious way. Students can also identify and understand the author's use of past, present, and future time though they miss some details. On the other hand, they may have complexity with very abstract or complex printed materials.
+
Intermediate High
A reading proficiency rating of + means that students are at the Intermediate High level. They understand the majority of the main ideas of descriptions, narrations, and letters, only if they are written in a clear way and they are about the students' personal and social needs and interests. Though, students may have a need of help in turn of understanding difficult sentences.
I
Intermediate
A reading proficiency rating of I denotes that students are at the Intermediate level. They can understand a number of most important ideas and various facts in public and social announcements, instructions, and short descriptions of people, places, and things. Students cannot always understand everything in printed materials even when they are written in a clear and direct way about personal and social topics.
L
Below Intermediate
A reading proficiency rating of L means that students are at the Below Intermediate level. They can understand just a few practical words or phrases found, for instance, on restaurant menus, signs, and product labels. Students find it hard to understand whole sentences even when clues, such as pictures and drawings, are present, or when the sentences are quite easy.
