Like other similar tests, GRE measures the average intellectual ability particular disciplines. The GRE has chosen math and English.
The GRE test can poorly predict school; progress. This is to be expected since the tests are written by the same company (ETS) and are similar. The GRE's verbal section, however, is signifi¬cantly harder (more big words), and, surprisingly, the GRE's math section is slightly easier.
The tests verbal section is comparatively harder though the math section is easier than that of other tests. The GRE also includes a writing section that the SAT does not.
But of course no test can reflect and evaluate all the students mental abilities. Nevertheless, some form of admission testing is necessary. Educational establishments cannot accept students regarding only their grades. Furthermore, a system that would monitor the academic standards of every class would be cost prohibitive and stifling. So until a better system is proposed, the admission test is here to stay.
The GRE CAT is approximately three hours long. There are four sections in the CAT: - Verbal (30 minutes); - Math (45 minutes); - Writing (75 minutes); - Experimental, which can be Verbal or Math.
The verbal section contains 6 Sentence Completions, 7 Analogies, 8 Reading Comprehension, and 9 Antonyms. The math section contains 14 Quantitative Comparisons, 9 Multiple Choice, and 5 Graphs. The writing section contains 2 writing tasks.
The experimental section can be a verbal section or a math section. You won't know which section is experimental. You will know which type of section it is, though, since there will be an extra one of that type.
Because the "bugs" have not been worked out of the experimental section, this portion of the GRE is often more difficult and confusing than the other parts.
The experimental section being more difficult, doing poorly on a particular section will take some solace in the hope that it may have been the experimental section. In other words, do not allow one difficult section to discourage your performance on the rest of the GRE. The GRE CAT has the same type of questions as the old writing test. The difference is how the questions are presented.
In taking the CAT there are privileges and drawbacks. Probably the main advantages are: - you are to take cat any time you like; - you can take it in a small room instead of large auditorium.
Disadvantages:
- you cannot return to the previous question; - you will more probably miss something on the screen than on page; The pace of passing the test
Even despite time limit, you need not hurry, cause if will spoil your results. Many problems need more thoughtful consideration. Students often try to read material quickly and therefore make many mistakes. They are sure they answered correctly but when discover they are not, it’s too late actually.
In contrast to other tests the GRE is not test students to answer every question in. If you try to do so you may spoil your result. For the vast majority of people, the key to performing well on the GRE is not the number of questions they solve, within reason, but the percentage they solve correctly.
